Veg on the Edge returns to Saltaire Festival 2021

Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 September
Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September

12.00pm to 4.30pm

After a two year hiatus (we won’t mention why), we are delighted to once again be taking part in Saltaire Festival. Our growing spaces will form part of the Open Gardens Trail on the opening weekend, 11 and 12 September.

Members of our group will be on site at the Sunday School Garden, Caroline Street car park, over both weekends. Drop by to say hello, treat yourself to some homemade goodies, take a look at what we’ve been growing, and find out how you can get involved.

You can also pick up a copy of our vintage recipes and household tips sourced from local newspapers published in the late 1800s to early 1900s. This is perfect if you want to know how to cure earache with an onion or use tomatoes to remove stains (!) All donations made at our pop-up stall will help fund the ongoing maintenance and development of our sites in the village.

Other highlights of the opening weekend include West Yorkshire Organic Show, Art & Photography exhibitions, special events, heritage tours, and pop ups in village houses. Click here to download a guide to the opening weekend.

Photo Competition – International Saltaire

Saltaire InspiredSaltaire Collection and Saltaire History Club are excited to announce the launch of a photography competition as part of the 20th anniversary of Saltaire’s UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription in 2021. The theme of the competition will be International Saltaire.

The public are encouraged, whether they are hobbyists or professionals, to submit photos for consideration between now and the 3rd May 2021.

You might choose to draw on Saltaire’s many historical international links, such as the internationally sourced materials used at Salts Mill from Russia or Peru and elsewhere or the movement of Irish, mainland European and South Asian communities to live and work here. You might focus on the present by celebrating the lives and contributions of local people who have come from other countries to make Saltaire their home or place of work.

Or, you could consider the digital future of Saltaire through the international business taking place, be it large companies such as Arris or smaller start-ups being run from a laptop in a former millworker’s cottage.

A small selection of the best photos will be chosen for display as part of a larger heritage exhibition, Saltaire: Foundation and Legacy, running from 28 May to 20 June 2021 in the old boardroom at Salts Mill. The exhibition is FREE but ticketed, to ensure a safe visit for all.

From that selection, a community jury will award prizes to three entrants and a fourth will be selected via a popular vote.

Veg on the Edge secure funding to continue growing activities

We are delighted to share the news that we have been successful in our application to Bradford Council’s Cleaner Streets Fund.

We have been awarded a grant of £1,688 to sustain our ongoing activities and make much needed investments in the infrastructure required to maintain our five public growing sites. 

Prior to Covid-19, we ran stalls up to 6 times a year (coinciding with local events and festivals) offering homemade produce and merchandise to attract donations. This funding supported the day-to-day maintenance of our sites and general group running costs (e.g. tools, plants, compost, insurance, website hosting).

As we are not able to raise funds in this way for the time being, the Cleaner Streets grant will ensure we are able to continue our growing activities in the coming year and maintain these valued and attractive public spaces.  

The Cleaner Streets Fund aims to support neighbours to get together and put forward community-led ideas and projects that will help make our streets and areas cleaner. It provides an opportunity to get even more people engaged with helping to make a positive difference to their surroundings. You can find out more about the Cleaner Streets Fund here.

Newly established Shipley Town Council is looking for two new councillors

Shipley Town Council is the parish council for the town of Shipley in West Yorkshire and was created on 1 April 2020.

The Town Council’s creation was the result of a public campaign, led by Rob Martin, which demonstrated the support of local residents using a petition, which prompted a statutory Community Governance Review.

The Town Council has nine temporary councillors, all appointed by City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council until May 2021.

The councillors were appointed, rather than elected, because of the Coronavirus pandemic, which led to the postponement of the 2020 local government elections. The appointed town councillors are unpaid.

The Town Council has two remaining vacancies for temporary councillors and applications are now open:

  • Nab Wood & Moorhead Ward (one vacancy)
  • Shipley Central & Dockfield Ward (one vacancy)

Can you plant some seeds for us?

Unfortunately our gardening sessions are on hold for the moment. We’ve also been unable to hold our annual seed sowing session so we’re asking for you to help us out by starting some of your own fruit/veg seeds off at home ready to plant out with us when the lockdown is over.

Things you need to get going:

  • compost*
  • seeds*
  • something to grow them in*
  • somewhere to keep them*

*You might think you don’t have any/all of these things but with a bit of creative thinking you might be surprised how easy it is to get started. Here are some ideas to help you out:


All you really need here is a bit of soil. Proper compost is the five star option here but a lot of seeds will grow in soil from the garden so just dig a bit up and have a go.

If you don’t have any soil to hand you can always try out making your own instant compost from household waste (you’ll need to vary the consistency depending on whether you’re using as a plant drink or soil substitute).


Have a root through the back of your cupboards for a half empty seed packet or two – there’s usually something lurking back there! Even if the packet is out of date it’s worth trying a few seeds out. And if you draw a blank on the seed hunt why not try using leftovers from your lunch including: chilli, pepper or apple seeds – use your imagination and experiment!

Something to grow them in

Apart from the obvious plant pots there are so many other options on this one – any single use plastic item are great e.g. mushroom boxes or margarine tubs. Or biodegradable options include egg boxes, toilet rolls and newspaper (made into pot shapes).

Somewhere to grow them

A sunny windowsill will do the trick here. If you don’t have a spare window sill you can always make yourself a hanging window shelf. Other options include planting them straight outside and making a cloche to protect the seeds (those pesky single use plastic bottles work well for this) or making yourself a coldframe out of bits and bobs.

Time to trim the fruit bushes…

Pruning is probably one of those job you put off….surely it’s better to leave it be than chop the wrong thing off, right!?….think again! Pruning is actually necessary for the optimum health and yield of fruit trees and once you know what you’re doing it’s easy pea-sy (had to get a veg pun in there somewhere!)
If you’re not sure what pruning is or how to do it we’ll be pruning our Veg on the Edge fruit trees on Wednesday 19th February at 1pm meeting at the Baker Beds site (far end of Caroline Street). Come and join us to find out more about:
  • How and when to prune fruit trees
  • What tools to use and how to use them
  • How to keep your tools sharp and clean….and why this is important!
You’re welcome to bring your own tools but we’ll have a supply too.
If you’re already a dab hand at pruning and just fancy helping us out then you’re more than welcome to join us too!

Seed Swap 8th February!

With spring just around the corner it’s time to stock up on your seeds for the growing season ahead!

Veg on the Edge will have a seed swap stall at the now-famous West Yorkshire Organic Group’s Potato Day in Exhibition Hall, Shipley College, Saltaire on 8th February 10:00-2:00. You can bring us some of your own seeds to swap with ours or donate any extras for us to grow in the community veg beds. If you don’t have any seeds to swap you can still join in the fun and ‘pay as you feel’ for any seeds you fancy!

And while you’re there don’t forget to stock up on your potatoes!

Coming soon to Saltaire Festival…

As usual, we’ll be having a stall at the Sunday School gardens (in the Caroline Street car park) on the opening weekend of Saltaire Festival on 14th and 15th September – we hope to see you there! Our other garden sites are also included on the open gardens trail and are worth a forage through.

If you take a wander past the Wash House Gardens over the weekend you’ll be greeted by a feast for the ears (as well as a literal feast from the veg beds!) as there will be lovely music from a three-piece acoustic band feat. Richard Babington, Lisa Mallaghan and Dan McGlade.
