Coffee Plant

20190529_185516Latin name: Coffea
Location: Plot on Platform 1 (though it goes inside when it gets cold so you won’t see it in winter)
What it looks like: The Coffee Plant is a small evergreen shrub with thick, glossy, oval, dark green leaves. It has small white flowers which turn into yellow to green to red fruits called cherries.
History:
The Coffee Plant has been around since before the year 1000. The first cup of coffee produced from Coffee Plants grown in England wasn’t until 2008 (and that was at the Eden Project!).
How to eat it: The fruit seeds (beans) once dried are the edible part of the Coffee Plant, and can be used to make coffee.
More information: Most cherries only have two beans per fruit!
